FAQ

Why use clay?

Clay plaster is one of the most beautiful, durable and robust materials to have in your home or business and can be applied to almost any wall, structure or ceiling just like you would with regular plaster.

Clay plasters however offer far more benefits as they are completely free from VOCs, polymers and all other dangerous chemicals which other plasters contain and they also help inhibit mould growth, create healthier indoor air quality and offer far more finishes, colours and textures.

Clay is also an abundant natural resource that takes very little energy to process and does not damage the earth when disposed of. Making clay plaster one of the most sustainable building materials you can have in your living or working space.

It also has a beautiful non-sheen finish that’s more matt than other toxin based plasters and when finished with our natural raw earth paints, the whole wall becomes alive with natural movement and contour.

Where can I use clay plaster in my home?

Clay plaster can be used in any room of your home including bathrooms, kitchens and staircases. The only place clay plaster can not be used is directly inside your shower cubicle.

And what paint finish do you recommend to get the colour I want?

We offer a natural and sustainable raw earth paint finish in a full range of colours and tones from Mediterranean bright whites to dark concrete grey and midnight black, along with raw earth terracottas, earthy browns and warm shades of wheat, savanna plains and natural stone.

Our paint ranges add extra strength to your walls, have a natural anti bacterial function and are more resistant against dirt and stains than other paints and finishes.

They are also visually captivating, easy to maintain and very easy to change should you decide to create a new colour, tone or texture.

Do you offer services for commercial spaces and businesses?

Yes we do and our natural clay and raw earth paint finishes are suitable for almost all retail and commercial spaces. Especially bars, cafes, restaurants, well-being centres, yoga studios, meditation spaces, galleries and shared working/office hubs.

Is there anywhere clay plaster and natural paint can not be used?

Our clay plasters and paints can be applied to almost any wall, structure or ceiling in your home apart from directly inside your shower cubicle. It can still be used in the bathroom but not on the walls inside the cubicle. It’s a perfect finish for kitchens due to its inherent anti bacterial function and because our materials are more resistant against dirt and stains they are also ideal for hallways, staircases and living areas.

And unlike tiles or other expensive design features, clay walls are very easy to change should you wish to have a new colour, texture or tone.

Installation and upkeep

How much does clay plaster installation from mudearth cost?

Feature walls start from as little as £695 for the application of our natural clay plaster finish, which includes all materials, installation and labour. And our raw earth paint finishes start from £395, again with all materials included. A full room such as an average sized living room including all materials, labour, consultation and design starts from £1095 for the natural clay plaster and £595 for the organic bespoke paint. (Again this includes all materials and labour.)

If you require your room boarded out with natural plaster boards prior to installation of the clay plaster, this would of course incur an extra cost, however most surfaces can be plastered on and this is something we can discuss when we see your project.

Our feature wall services which start from just £695, such as fireplace walls and living space walls are ideal for those who want to dip their toes into the world of clay before committing to whole room or larger scale projects.

How long does it take?

If we are able to plaster directly onto the surfaces in your home or business then a small room or feature wall could be finished and ready to use in just 3 days.

Often there will be the need for an extra day or two for the clay to naturally dry out before we apply the paint finish, but this is all dependant on the weather, humidity and substrate of your walls.

Then because there are no toxic fumes or particles from either the clay or the paint, your space can be used almost straight away.

What after services do you offer?

Due to the longevity and robustness of clay plaster and our natural paint finishes, it is very rare that our services are required after installation. However if any accidental knocks, scuffs or marks occur, we offer a full repair service at a small aftercare charge.

Which areas of the North East do you cover?

We cover all areas of North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne and most of Northumberland.

How messy is installation?

While installation of clay plaster looks messy, this is just down to the fact that the clay has far more water in the mix than regular toxic plasters and paints which use chemicals to dry it out. However, because clay can easily be cleaned from surfaces and is a natural product from the earth, it is usually the installers who get the most messy. But just like any other painting or plastering work undertaken, we ensure that everything is covered up and safe from damage and clean up as we leave.

Do you offer any other natural building services?

We used to offer other services but as demand for our clay plaster services increased, we knew our passion was with clay. We can advise on other aspects of how nature can shape your living or working space but right now it is all about the clay and natural paint finishes.

Do you offer interior design services?

While we are not officially interior designers by trade, we do have extensive knowledge of how to create beautiful, organic spaces that connect with nature.

Some members of our team have also studied ancient systems of design like Feng Shui and organic living techniques, and would be happy to share any advice or knowledge gained from these still hugely relevant traditions of interior design.
